Dora and Agnes Bulwer Collection


Little is known of the Bulwer sisters: daughters of Archibald Bedford Bulwer, and granddaughters of Rev. James Bulwer (the painter). Dora was born in Naples in 1864 where their father Archibald r worked for a British company, Holme & Co. Agnes, the elder sister, was a painter and a keen photographer. After the death of their mother, they moved to Rome.

The Collection
This outstanding and unique collection consists of more than 1,200 original photographic prints, and nearly 890 nitrate negatives. The images concern various and many landscape views of Italy, France, Greece and some of them are included in personal travel albums.

What’s online
In 2002 The Getty Foundation funded a project to catalogue and digitize three unique 19th century collections in the BSR Photographic Archive which included the Dora and Agnes Bulwer Collection which is fully browsable online.
